Interplay of Light
Project Overview
Interplay of Light is a photographic series created as part of my final self-directed project during the foundation year of my studies. Inspired by Richard Serra’s verb list particularly “to light” and his belief that “space is material,” this project explores light, space, and nature. Research into land art, environmental art, and the Light and Space movement, particularly the works of artists Robert Irwin and James Turrell, shaped the conceptual foundation for this series.
Central to the project is a sculptural mirror cube, which I designed to intentionally contrast human intervention with the natural landscape. By capturing the interplay of light and shadow, the series aims to create a surreal sense of harmony while subtly addressing our evolving relationship with the natural world.
This project marked a turning point in my practice, highlighting the importance of research, planning, and concept development in creating meaningful visual outcomes. It has since continued to shape my work.
Design & Process
Creating the mirror cube was a pivotal part of this series. Inspired by light and reflection, I designed and built the cube as a sculptural element to be immersed in the natural landscape. The process required careful planning, from initial sketches to testing different reflective materials, such as acrylic and polished steel. Capturing the cube in various lighting conditions posed challenges but also led to unexpected moments, allowing for experimentation and play.
